Traffic snarl worries Ota residents

Published by Tribune on Mon, 07 Nov 2011

Residents, motorists and passengersof Ota in Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Area of Ogun State have called on the state and local governments to look into the problem of traffic snarl in the area.Community News gathered from residents that the situation of traffic management in the area was in shamble, as motorists and passengers usually spend quality man hours in the traffic hold up, especially during the peak hours. Some of the residents who spoke with Community News blamed the situation on the way motorists abandoned vehicles on the way. 'The situation of traffic snarl in this area is terrible. We often spend between two to three hours in traffic hold up when going out in the morning or while returning from work in the evening. The situation is caused mainly by the way motorists abandon vehicles on the highways.'You discover that people often leave their vehicles on the street for days and this often caused serious traffic snarl in area like Ojoo-Oore of Ota,' Adebayo Akanmu, a commercial driver told Community News.Apart from this, another factor that often contributed to the problem of traffic congestion in the area is street trading. An okada rider, Taofeek Alabi told Community News that traders often take over half of the road in the evening, thus reducing the space available to motorists to pass.He advised government agencies responsible for traffic control to be alive to their duties by ensuring that street trading and other vices were controlled.'The major problem causing traffic snarl in the area is street trading. There will be free flow of traffic if street trading is controlled. Traders often take over the road thus causing motorists and other road users to move at snarl speed', he said.Alibi also urged the local government to provide towing vehicles to clear the streets of abandoned vehicles. 'We need towing vehicles in this area to clear abandoned vehicles and their owners should be made to pay the cost of towing. We should learn how to do things right. The rate at which people abandon their vehicle should be controlled.
