Published by Guardian on Mon, 07 Nov 2011

FOR lovers of Islamic wears for prayer and Asalatu, there is a bubbling market for jalamia for men and women, head ties, scarves and iborun in the heart of Lagos. The place, Lagoon Central Mosque Plaza, popularly called Moshalasi Jimoh, is located on Balogun Road, Lagos Island. All kinds of Islamic dresses, cosmetics and different kinds of jalamia are sold in the market. Traders sell wholesale and retail. For Hajias who want to look good all the time, the market is a place where they can have a variety of products at affordable prices.Established in the 80s, the market is well known all over Lagos Island. Some of the traders say their customers come from as far as Ilorin, Kano and Ibadan to buy in bulk. Others who want to travel and sell outside the country also patronise them because their products are of good quality.'We make good sales, especially during Ramadan because we sell quality products for men, women and even children. Although some people still believe they have to travel to Saudi Arabia before they can get quality products, the stress notwithstanding. We used to buy some of our goods from Saudi Arabia but later, people started bringing in products from different countries,' one of the traders, Alhaja Shertex said.Another trader, Alhaja Moridiyat who has been in the market for the past six years making a living, told The Guardian that many ladies patronise them. The price range is as follows: Jalamia and head tie, N5,000; scarves, from N300 to N500. All kinds of designer headgears for ladies are sold at reasonable prices. However, in spite of its popularity, spacious stalls, excellent and affordable goods, many people in the metropolis are unaware of the market.
