If your cap fits, expand your head

Published by Tribune on Tue, 22 Mar 2011

A young man was fishing. Each time he threw the net, he hauled in a substantial catch. Then he would measure each fish by the length of a stick he was holding. Whichever was shorter than the stick, he threw into a basket by his side. The longer ones he threw back into the river. This happened daily for a long time until one day when a man who had watched him for some time walked up to him and asked:Sorry sir, I dont mean to interfere, but I am curious. I have watched you measure every fish you caught with that stick in your hand and throw every big fish back into the river. Any particular reasonOh that The diameter of my cooking pot is the length of the stick. So whenever I catch a fish that cannot fit the pot, I throw it back. answered the young fisherman. But have you thought of selling the ones you do not need to make money to perhaps enable you buy a bigger potAll around me, I have watched people stagnate because of a patent unwillingness to see beyond their present horizon. When I was a little boy, mirages held an indefinable attraction to me. Every time I saw one, I always literally ran towards it with the expectation that I would one day catch up with it. The reason I grew up with the myth that if anyone ventured under the ground wherever he saw a mirage, he would dig up more gold than his entire lineage could ever use in one lifetime. So I kept on dreaming that one day, I would locate the exact spot where the mirage was and I would hit it big. The only snag was that the closer I seemed to move to it, the farther it moved away from me!Well, I never did catch up with a mirage but I never stopped dreaming. I grew up with huge dreams of possibilities - until I started talking to adults who took away my dreams with their impossibility mindsets. They defined for me what was possible and what was not and I believed them. They had copious examples of people who had bigger dreams but couldnt achieve them. So they told me to be reasonable. For several years of my adult life, I believed them. By so doing, they functionally determined the length of my cooking pot. They meant well but they didnt see what I saw. Subjecting my realities to the limits of their reason, I unintentionally clipped my own wings. Then I gave my life to Christ. Again I had the misfortune of being discipled by well-intentioned people who taught me to think so much of heaven that I literally became earthly useless because of postponed expectations.Fortunately, I decided to know God for myself and chose to read the Bible with ONE prayer, Lord, show me YOUR truth. He did. The more I read the Bible, the more I saw possibilities and wider horizons. When I read things like, With God, all things are possible, I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me, Be fruitful, multiply, replenish the earth, subdue it, have dominion, If you believe, what I do and even more, you will do, I came to the conclusion that my limits are set only in God! I threw away the old cooking pot and, aint no stopping me now. What is the size of your own cooking pot Is your horizon limited by your present realities Expand it. Achievers live their lives in the possibilities they have seen not in the realities they have mastered. When Henry Ford thought of a car that the average American family could afford, all he saw was a possibility. He enlarged his reality to meet it. The rest is history.Life-changing ventures begin as possibilities that challenge status quo.Possibilities around you are limitless. Contentment is not the same as containment. Celebrate with gratitude every level of achievement but remember there are still new territories to conquer. Life is constantly evolving. Yesterdays loser may be todays champion. However, there is no possibility of a change of result until there is first a change of routine! Set higher standards for yourself. Challenge yourself with bigger dreams. The world doesnt generally deliver to you beyond your vision. Step out beyond familiar terrain and start enlarging your capacity. If you truly want to increase the size of your fish, you will have to change the length of your stick. Yoruba say that if your cap fits, wear it. I differ. As far as I am concerned, if your cap fits, expand your head! The cap that fits your head puts limitations on the capacity of your head to grow! May life week bring you possibilities longer and bigger than the length of your stick.A GIFT - The first 100 people to send me an email after reading this will get two chapters from my e-book The 60-Second Motivator.Remember, the sky is not your limit, God is!
