Ericsson to showcase impact of networked society at AfricaCom

Published by Nigerian Compass on Mon, 07 Nov 2011

Global leader in technology, Ericsson will present the latest in technology solutions that are redefining the way Africa embraces economic growth and wealth potential. At the same time, Ericsson will demonstrate its strength in providing a sustainable solution for development.Lars Lindn, head of Ericsson sub-Saharan Africa, will present the role of mobile broadband in Networking Africa on the first day of the main conference while the firm will focus on four areas at its demonstration booth. One of them is broadband for all.More people in sub-Saharan Africa today connect to Internet using a mobile device than those using a fixed connection; this implies that future access to broadband Internet in the region will be driven by wireless broadband services.Ericsson will demonstrate the latest 4G LTE and various products and services which enable mobile operators to deploy a network and related service solutions to ensure a profitable data business. Earlier this year Ericsson launched a pilot LTE network in South Africa for a leading mobile operator in the country.Another area of interest is cloud computing. The Cloud means a multitude of things to telecom operators, a way to buy services from the Cloud rather than building them in-house; through a business opportunity for offering cloud services to enterprises via alliances and/or bundles to a business opportunity for building their own clouds, even federated ones and potentially including their own application offerings.Ericsson's Cloud Services demonstration will explore the relevance of cloud based solutions and demonstrate how operators can address the opportunity to provide mobile broadband enabled computing to the next billion users through solutions such as PC as a Service, Education Suite and e Health. In addition, Ericsson's cloud expert Konstantinos Tzingakis will offer a master class as part of the main on the first day of AfricaCom.Rural connectivity is another focal point Unique opportunities exist in Africa for mobile applications that do not exist in more developed markets, for example banking and basic information services. Innovative ways to cut the cost of building and operating networks is making it increasingly viable for operators to implement mobile networks in rural areas. Some of these solutions include Ericsson's Managed Rural Coverage, a new offering that bundles a managed service with a cost-efficient GSM mini-site solution. This will be showcased in Ericsson's rural connectivity demonstration. Then is the connected devices which is relevant to Africa According to published research, there are already more than 72 million Machine to Machine (M2M) connections globally a number which is expected to increase almost fourfold by 2016, to 282 million. This is equivalent to 1.4% of all mobile subscriptions in 2010, increasing to 3.6% in 2016. In other words, almost 9% of new mobile connections between 2010 and 2016 will be M2M subscriptions.1Ericsson's connected devices demonstration will showcase how mobile communication will efficiently support M2M and person-to-machine communication and tools for operators to manage M2M communication.
