23-year-old remanded for car theft

An Igbosere Magistrates Court, Lagos, has ordered the remand of a 23-year-old man, Femi Adeyemi, over an alleged car theft.Adeyemi was accused of conspiring with others now at large on January 30 to steal a Toyota Hilux truck valued at N4m from Ojo Adepoju at Mangoro Bus-Stop, Agege area of Lagos.Adeyemi was arrested by men of the Federal Special Anti-robbery Squad in Imeko/Ilara area of Ogun State, where he took the car to. He also allegedly confessed to the crime having been identified by the victim.The FSARS alleged that Adeyemi and his accomplices used offensive weapons to rob Adepoju of the vehicle with the number plate XXX 299 AGL. However no weapon was found on him when he was arrested.Adeyemi is charged with conspiracy to commit felony and armed robbery which is said to be contrary to and punishable under sections 403(a) and 402(2)(b) of the Criminal Code Cap C17, Vol. II Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2003.Police prosecutor, Raymond Akhaine, filed an application for the remand of the accused pending the advice of the Directorate of Public Prosecutions.It appears that the issue of jurisdiction will affect the trial of the accused in your court. It is our humble request for the remand of the accused to enable the DPP to give legal advice for final prosecution at the appropriate court in pursuance of Section 268(1) of Administration of Criminal Justice Law of Lagos State, 2007,Akhaine said.While ordering the remand of the accused, the Magistrate, Mrs. C.J. Momodu, said the prosecution file should be duplicated and forwarded to the DPP and subsequently adjourned the case till December 5 for mention.Meanwhile, men of the Nigeria Police, Maroko Division, also arraigned a 42-year-old man, Issa Kareem, for violating traffic laws.Kareem allegedly drove a BMW saloon car with the number plate GT 169 AAA without a valid driving licence and appropriate vehicle documents on Admiralty Road Lekki, Lagos.The accused was also said to have driven the car in a reckless and carefree manner which led to the damage of a Mercedes Benz car and a Range Rover Jeep belonging to Kolade Fakehinde and Kehinde Olatigbe respectively.That you Issa Kareem on October 31, 2011 on Admirality Road, Lekki Phase I, within the Lagos Magisterial District drove a BMW saloon in a reckless and dangerous manner without a driving licence and relevant vehicle documents, the charge sheet reads in part.The offences contravened sections 18(1), 28(1), 36(1) and 14(1) Cap 124 Vol. VI of the Road Traffic Act of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2003.When the plea of the accused was taken, he pleaded not guilty to all the charges against him.The Magistrate, Mrs. Oshodi Makanju, admitted the accused to bail in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties in like sum. She added that the sureties must provide evidence of tax payments.The case has been adjourned till November 10 for further hearing.
