LG boss to pay social security to the aged

Published by Punch on Tue, 08 Nov 2011

The Chairman, Yaba Local Council Development Authority, Mr. Jide Jimoh, on Thursday said his administration would start providing security allowances for residents of the area aged 70 years and above.Jimoh stated this in an interview shortly after inaugurating the council legislature comprising nine members, one of whom is of the Peoples Democratic Party. He said it was worrisome that elderly members of the society who were supposed to be enjoying their retirement were still toiling. He said he was alarmed when he heard that an 80-year-old man died in a queue while waiting to collect his pension, saying he did not want the same fate to befall the aged in his council.Within the next 100 days in office, we will institute a security allowance scheme for the aged from 70 years and above. We will start giving them stipends on a monthly basis. 70 years is not a joke; so we should be able to take care of our people who attain such age and above, Jimoh said.He also said his government would ensure that potholes, which dot some parts of the LCDA, would be no more during the second term.He urged the new councillors to be alive to their responsibilities and not to abandon the people who voted them in power. Also, Jimoh said members and executives of Community Development Committees and Community Development Associations in the LCDA should know that the groups are voluntary organisations.During their inauguration, Jimoh urged those whose motive is to make money from the government in the course of performing their duties to the society to have a rethink. He said, The CDCs and CDAs are to ensure development of our communities and they involve every one of us to take part in what is happening in our communities. They are about love and togetherness.CDC is a voluntary organisation. It is not an avenue to make money. They should not expect to be paid salaries. If they expect salaries, it means the government will continue to pay other voluntary organisations such as Boys Scout, Girls Guild, Red Cross, etc. Though we have Imprest we give to CDC as a body, they are expected to utilise it across board. In his acceptance speech, Chairman, CDC, Apostle John Ojo, said the committee would collaborate with the council for the good of the people of the area.He commended the council for providing a functional office for them, saying it was born out ofthe confidence the chairman reposed in them.
