Published by Tribune on Tue, 08 Nov 2011

THE seeming lull inthe cult violence inBayelsa State gave way, on Sunday night, as five persons were shot death in a renewed hostilities among warring cult groups in Yenagoa, the Nigerian Tribune investigation has revealed.Fear gripped residents of Edepie suburb, where the killings occurred around 8.15 p.m, as they scampered for safety when the assailants shot sporadically into different directions, after they had allegedly succeeded in gunning down their victim, who was said to be cooling off in a pub.A source told the Nigerian Tribune that the unidentified gunmen, who stormed the area in a black Mercedes Benz Jeep, actually came to kill their target at a relaxation joint, identified as Phil Collins Bar, but stray bullets hit four other persons around the area, which eventually led to their death. When the Nigerian Tribune visited the scene at School Road in the Edepie suburb at about 9.15 p.m on Sunday, the remains of the deceased had been evacuated by the police team, which responded to an anonymous distress call over the incident. However, plantain leaves used to cover the victims and blood stains were still visible before the Nigerian Tribune left the scene. An eyewitness told the Nigerian Tribune that 'the assailants, on arrival, went straight for their target and pumped lead from their guns, killing him instantly and made away with his body.'While confirming the incident to newsmen, on Monday, the state Commissioner of Police, Mr Hilary Opara, said his men had commenced investigation into the matter, adding that the culprits would be made to face the full wrath of the law.
