Traders plead for bank in Katsina

Published by Tribune on Tue, 08 Nov 2011

Traders at the Grains Market in Bakori Local Government Area of Katsina State have appealed for the opening of a commercial bank within the market vicinity. The chairman of the traders, Alhaji Abdullahi Lawal, said that the absence of a bank in the area had made the movement of cash difficult.Lawal added that the only bank in the council area had been closed after it was raided by armed robbers two years ago.He said that the situation was constituting a hitch to business growth as the traders were afraid to carry large sums of money for fear of being robbed.Lawal said that traders from different parts of the country, as well as the neighbouring countries were coming to the market for transactions. He pleaded with the relevant authorities to facilitate the opening of a new bank or reopening of the former one to ease business transactions and enhance the growth of the market.According to him, 'we traders are paying taxes promptly and that is why we are calling the local government authorities to construct more toilets and stalls in the market. It was learnt that the market opens twice a week.At the market, a bag of local rice sold for between N11,000 and N12,000, a bag of maize for between N4,700 and N5,300, a bag of Soya beans sold for N8,600, while a bag of beans was about N8,500.He appealed to the state government to check encroachment into the premises of the veterinary clinic by farmers and land developers."The premises of the veterinary clinic has been converted into farm lands and shops by land developers,'' Lawal added.
