Insecurity: CDRP sues for peace

Published by Tribune on Tue, 08 Nov 2011

A human rights group, the Committee for Democracy and Rights of the People(CDRP), has enjoined Muslim faithful in the country to use the period of Eid-El-Kabir festival to imbibe the tenets of peace during the period. Also, it urged the Muslims to promote peace across the nation and use the period for sober reflection to pray for the nation in order to overcome its myriads of challenges, particularly the pervasive insecurity in the land. This was contained in a statement signed by CDRP's national coordinator, Comrade Amitolu Shittu and made available to newsmen in Osogbo, Osun State capital at the weekend in commemoration of this year annual Eid-El-Kabir festival. He advised Nigerians to be tolerant and love one another irrespective of religious inclinations. He stated that the recent happenings in the last one year in the country as it concerns security makes it imperative to pray for peace and survival of corporate existence of the country. He also urged the Muslims to live exemplary lives worthy of emulation, saying the period calls for discipline, respect for legally constituted authorities, tolerance, honesty, sincerity of purpose and peaceful co-existence, adding that Nigerians should realise that no religion preach violence against fellow human being.Shittu, who lamented the loss of lives and properties in the country due to the security challenge ascribed to Boko Haram sect, advised the group to allow peace to reign and embrace legal and constitutional means of settling their grievances with the authority in order to correct the impression of Islam being a violent religion. He further stated that the current security challenge call for divine intervention, appealing to people to toe the path of peace, harmony, and respect for the sanctity of life by shunning hatred and bitterness."I want to say that it does not augur well for us at this stage of development to advertently or inadvertently embark on self-destruction or take action that will amount to diminishing our long years of toil and sweat to keep Nigeria together," he added.
