Man in court for knocking out policeman's tooth

A 26-year-old man, David Fidelis, has been arraigned before an Igbosere Magistrates Court, Lagos, for allegedly beating a policeman and knocking out his tooth.Fidelis was accused of beating up Mr. Emmanuel Oseni, a police corporal attached to the Central Police Division, Adeniji Adele, Lagos, while performing his official duties on Adeniji Adele Road, Lagos. Fidelis, who was charged with assault and obstruction of law enforcement agents, allegedly landed several heavy blows on Osenis face and the policeman lost a tooth in the process.The charge sheet reads, "That you, David Fidelis, on November 1, 2011 at about 8pm on Adeniji Adele Road, did obstruct a policeman, Mr. Emmanuel Oseni, from carrying out his official duty by assaulting and beating him (with fist blows) thereby removing his tooth causing him permanent deformity."The offences, according to the police, contravened sections 356(2), and 355 of the Criminal Code, Cap 17, Vol. II Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2003.When the charges were read to the accused person, he pleaded not guilty.The Magistrate, Mrs. A. A. Famobiwo, admitted him to bail in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties in like sum. She added that the sureties should provide evidence of tax payments to the Lagos State Government.The case has been adjourned till November 11, 2011 for mention.Meanwhile, at the same court, a 23-year-old, Owotale Oluwatosin, was arraigned by policemen from Ikoyi Division, Lagos, for allegedly raping a lady, Gloria (surname withheld) at Falomo Post Office, Lagos.Oluwatosin was accused of conspiring with others now at large to rape and assault Gloria at about 12:00hrs at the Post Office.The offence, according to the charge sheet read in court, was contrary to and punishable under sections 516 and 358 of the Criminal Code Cap 31 Vol. II Laws of Lagos State, 2003.Oluwatosin, who is facing three counts of conspiracy to commit felony, assault and rape, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges. Magistrate Mulikat Alli-Balogun, who granted the accused bail in the sum of N800,000 with two sureties in like sum, said each of the sureties must be gainfully employed, and should furnish the court with their statements of accounts for the last six months, National Identity Cards and their tax clearance certificates.She subsequently adjourned the case till November 22, 2011, for further hearing.
