LORD LAMIDO

Published by Tribune on Wed, 09 Nov 2011

GOVERNOR Sule Lamido of Jigawa State must have carefully read Cervantes's Don Quixote. A knight of feverish imagination and extravagant pretentions, like the Don himself, Governor Lamido is often to be seen tilting at windmills. But the governor's actions cause as much mirth as a millstone around the neck. The governor has the uncanny ability to see an obese enemy hiding behind a bowing blade of grass.ALHAJI Lamido was a silent Minister of Foreign Affairs, with former President Olusegun Obasanjo continually stealing his thunder. As the Junker of Jigawa, the governor has found his voice and cannot appear to stop jawing. He is forever fulminating against his 'enemies.'SOME months ago, the governor banned a correspondent for the Daily Trust from reporting his activities. He accused and convicted the correspondent and his newspaper of vicious hostility to his government. It was a judgment that had the hallowed hallmarks of fairness and sobriety.THE governor will certainly bring his vast experience as a fair judge into play in deciding the case of his predecessor as governor, Alhaji Saminu Turaki. He said he would do everything to see that the former governor, who is being prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, was jailed.WHAT provoked Governor Lamido so' Some senior members of the Action Congress of Nigeria in the state had been rash enough to challenge Governor Lamido's victory in the April election. Alhaji Turaki was a senatorial candidate of the ACN in the April general election.ACN's challenge was dismissed by the tribunal, but Governor Lamido was in no mood to be mollified. Instead, he issued threats. The Don cannot stop tilting at windmills.
