British firm to establish agro-allied industries in Ondo

Published by Punch on Thu, 10 Nov 2011

A United Kingdom-based firm, Seedrock International, has been contracted by the Ondo State Government to establish agro-allied cottage industries in communities across the 18 local government areas of the state. The Commissioner for Community Development and Cooperative Services, Mr. Clement Faboyede, stated this on Wednesday while briefing journalists on the planned disbursement of N73m grant-in-aid for self-help projects in rural communities scheduled for Thursday (today).Faboyede explained that the UK firm, which had established similar small and medium industries in some African countries, would soon send representatives to the state for an on-the-spot-assessment.He said the type of industries that would be established in each council would depend on the agricultural products being produced by farmers in the rural communities.Faboyede said, One good thing about the proposed arrangement is that apart from the fact that the farm produce of the farmers will be used as raw materials, the youth in each beneficiary community will also be hired as workers. This is the governments way of tackling poverty from all angles. The youth and the old will not only be empowered, but will be gainfully employed. He said Governor Olusegun Mimiko would present N73m to 17 communities in the state under the grant-in-aid to communal self help projects.Faboyede also hinted stated that the communities had been picked from Owo, Ifedore and Odigbo local government councils for the pilot phase of the quick-win projects.
