No proof yet that policeman raped 12-year-old orphan 'CP

Published by Punch on Thu, 10 Nov 2011

The Commissioner of Police, Ekiti State Police Command, Mr. Olayinka Balogun, on Wednesday said in a statement that there was no proof yet that a policeman raped a 12-year-old orphan (name withheld). The CP, who said this in a rejoinder to a story published in THE PUNCH on November 4, said investigations carried out so far had yet to implicate the policeman. The statement, which was signed on behalf of the CP by the Acting Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Victor Babyemi, stated that the command was not aware that the girl had been delivered of a baby. The wife of the state governor, Mrs. Bisi Fayemi, had on Thursday said the girl had been delivered of a baby girl. But the statement said, The commissioner of police viewed with dismay the story of the 12-year-old orphan who was allegedly raped by a policeman as it appeared on page 8 of THE PUNCH of November 4, 2011.The command wishes to state explicitly and in fairness to all parties involved, that a thorough and detailed investigation was carried out when the case was reported. So far, there is no conclusive proof that the girl was raped by the policeman. However, it was agreed by the parties that as soon as the girl is delivered of her baby, the command would be informed and a DNA test would be conducted to determine the paternity of the baby. This exercise will further prove the allegation of the girl or disprove the denial of the culprit. The command has yet to be informed that the girl has been delivered of a baby. The governors wife in an interview with our correspondent on Wednesday said the DNA would be conducted soon.Fayemi vowed that she would not allow the case to be swept under the carpet. She said, The case of this little girl was brought to my attention a couple of months ago by that time she was around six or seven months pregnant. She had been abused by a policeman and she had her baby last month. On the issue of the alleged perpetrator, we have been told that in a couple of months it would be okay to conduct a DNA test to determine the paternity of the baby. The girl, who was 11-year-old as at the time the crime was committed, was living with her grandma and she was reportedly raped more than once when she was sent on an errand.
