Fashplosion in Lagos

THE Expo Centre of Eko Hotels and Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos, was the destination for fashion in the country last week, as Style House Limited and MTN Nigeria collaborated to stage MTN Lagos Fashion and Design Week (LFDW).The show was aimed at promoting the business of fashion in the country, nurturing emerging talents, and creating a platform for designers to showcase their work to a target audience.The four-day event opened by the wife of Lagos State governor, Mrs. Abimbola Fashola, featured brands such as Nike Art Gallery, Nimbus, Leather Designers Association of Nigeria, Koketso, Bunmi Balogun, Anita Quansah, Blackberry, House of Tara, Pearl X Ghana, MTN British Council Young Designer of the Year finalists, Virgin Atlantic, Lanre Da Silva Ajayi, Ituen Basi and a host of others showing on the first day.Highlights of the event were the catwalk shows and presentations featuring new seasons collections from designers such as Ituen Basi, Chiepe, Phunk Afrique, Exclamations Couture by FAB, Xclamations!, Sunny Rose, Amede, Kelechi Odu, Jewel by Lisa, Kiki Kamanu, Obsidian, Odio Mimonet and others.In furtherance of the show's objective of empowering upcoming creative talents in the local fashion industry and British Council's dedication to growing creative industries, the 2011 MTN British Council Young Designer of The Year Competition held its finale during the week, featuring six looks per designer using Vlisco Real Dutch Wax.The judges unanimously declared Binta Shuaibu of Vintage Colette winner and she was presented with a Hyundai Jeep IX 35 valued at N4.5million by Ugo Nwowa, General Manager, Value Added Service, MTN Nigeria. The Young Model of the Year award went to Genevieve Aken.
