NCC pledges support for unified telecom regulation in Africa

As part of its efforts at ensuring the growth of the telecommunications industry in Africa, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has given its full support to the enthronement of a unified telecom regulation in the West African region.The NCC, which promised to do that by supporting the activities of the West African Telecom Regulators Assembly, (WATRA) noted that unified telecom regulation is essential for faster growth and cost effective intercontinental telecoms traffic in the region.Executive Vice Chairman of the Commission, Dr. Eugene Juwah made the pledge while receiving the council of the organization led by the President of the National Council on Regulation of the Republic of Niger, Mr. Almoustapha Boubacar, who is the chairman of WATRA, in his office in Abuja.Director, Public Affairs, Mr. Tony Ojobo, while receiving the WATRA delegation on behalf of the executive vice chairman of the NCC, Dr Eugene Juwah said that the Commission fully realizes the importance of WATRA, hence the pioneering role of the NCC and its leadership in the formation and sustenance of the sub-regional body.He said that in this era of regional and sub-regional integration, WATRA has a crucial role to play in the liberalization of services across the sub-region noting that for that reason, the Commission would assist regional body.He said that the NCC would in erecting a befitting headquarters building for the body to enable its management perform optimally and for the effective functioning of the body and its operations with the other regulatory bodies in the sub-region.WATRA's Executive Secretary, Mr. Nnamdi Nwokike, said that the NCC is a dependable ally of WATRA, stating that the decision of the council to pay a special visit to the leadership of the Commission and to solicit its continued support in all its activities was laudable.Reacting on the promise of the NCC on the erection of a befitting office in Nigeria, Boubacarsaid that it is one of the reasons for visiting the Commission asking the NCC to prevail on the federal government to give official recognition to the existence of its secretariat as a multilateral international institution.
