NGO seeks amendment to MTEF law

Published by Punch on Fri, 11 Nov 2011

A non-governmental organisation, Centre for Social Justice, has called on the National Assembly to amend the Medium Term Expenditure Framework law to enhance development in the country. The Lead Director of the organisation, Mr. Eze Onyekpere, gave the advice on Thursday in Abuja at a news conference. He said the Fiscal Responsibility Act provided that the MTEF should last three years, but that the government had elongated it to four years.Onyekpere said, The previous ones, which comply with the law, were all three years - 2010 to 2012 and 2011 to 2013 - but this is four years; this is a misnomer and is not in accordance with the provisions of the law.It is illegal and we are submitting that the National Assembly should restrict it to 2012 to 2014.The Fiscal Responsibility Act, according to the News Agency of Nigeria, was signed on July 30, 2007 to enable government to present the MTEF to the National Assembly for approval for another three years.According to Onyekpere, amendment of the MTEF will enhance Nigerias economic growth prospects and improve living conditions of the citizens. The CJS, chief, therefore, suggested that the amended MTEF should contain an evaluation and analysis of macroeconomic projections aligned to the Vision 2020 development plan.
