Man arraigned for terrorising neighbours

A 20-year-old-man, Lekan Yusuf, was on Thursday arraigned before an Igbosere Magistrates Court, Lagos, for allegedly conspiring with others at large to terrorise residents of Tapa, Igunu and Freeman streets on Lagos Island with dangerous weapons.Yusuf was alleged to have conspired with the others to foment trouble with the use of cutlasses, axes and other weapons at about 1am on November 8, 2011.They were alleged to have destroyed property including four vehicles belonging to residents of the streets.Yusuf was charged with conspiracy to commit felony, unlawful possession of arms and malicious damage.The police said the offences contravened sections 516, 80 and 451 of the Criminal Code Cap.17 Vol. II Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2004.The accused person pleaded not guilty when the charges were read to him.Yusufs lawyer, Mr. A.O. Opete, through an oral application, applied for his bail on liberal terms.Police prosecutor, Mr. Gbemileke Agoi, however, urged the court to consider the intense fear under which the residents of the streets now live before granting the accused bail.Before the court grants the accused bail, I will like to inform the court that due to the activities of Yusuf and his gang, residents of Tapa, Igunu and Freeman streets live and sleep in a state of perpetual fear, Agoi said.Magistrate J.A. Adegun granted Yusuf bail in the sum of N100,000 with two responsible sureties in like sum. He added that one of the sureties must be a community leader while the other must be a religious leader.Adegun said the sureties must also furnish the court with evidence of tax payments to the Lagos State Government, verifiable addresses and affidavit of means.The case was adjourned till December 12 for mention.
