Kaduna CP relocates to Kafanchan over violence

Published by Punch on Fri, 11 Nov 2011

Following the non-observance of the 24-hour curfew imposed on two local government areas and the increase in violence in the Southern part of Kaduna State, the state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Balla Nasarawa, has temporarily moved his office to Kafanchan to enforce the order. Our correspondent gathered that rampaging youths in Kafanchan intensified the destruction of property in the town on Wednesday night in spite of the imposition of a 24-hour curfew by the state government. The discovery of the corpse of a young man alleged to be an Hausa sparked off fresh violence in Kafanchan on Wednesday. Our correspondent learnt that suspected arsonists defied the curfew and heavily armed security operatives patrolling the town as they razed about four petrol stations and an unspecified number of residential buildings on the outskirts.Sporadic warning shots fired by soldiers into the air throughout the night to scare away the rioters did not deter them.No casualty figure has been confirmed but our correspondent gathered that a group of women were seen wailing over the unconfirmed news of the death of their children. The commissioner of police however declined comment when our correspondent called him on the telephone. We are very busy now, we are in Kafanchan now. Please, I cant talk to you now, he said.Security has however been beefed up throughout the other parts of the state to check any possible spillover of the violence. Operatives of the state anti-crime outfit, Operation Yaki, and heavily armed soldiers have been patrolling the nooks and crannies of the state capital and its outskirts.Meanwhile, no fewer than 20 suspects have been arrested by the police following the renewed wave of violence in Kafanchan, Jemaa Local Government Area of Kaduna State.Nasarawa said this in a telephone interview with our correspondent. He added that the suspects were arrested for allegedly taking part in the destruction of property in the town.He said, We are totally in control. We have effected between 15 and 20 arrests. The people were caught on the scene of the riots.
