Chelsea vs. Sporting Lisbon: Date, Time, Live Stream, TV Info and Preview

Published by Bleacher Report on Wed, 10 Dec 2014

Sporting Lisbon travel to London to face Premier League leaders Chelsea in an attempt to find a result which will see them progress from Group G in the Champions League. The Portuguese club need just a draw from their encounter at Stamford Bridge to see them qualify as group runners-up ahead of Schalke. But a defeat will open the door for the Bundesliga side and if they defeat Maribor, they will join Chelsea in the next phase. Here is how you can watch this gripping tie, with kick-off and streaming informationand a preview of the match:When: Wednesday, Dec. 10, at 7:45 p.m.GMT/2:45 p.m. ETWhere: Stamford Bridge, London, England.TV Info: Sky Sports 1 & HD (UK only) Fox (US only)Live Stream:Sky Go(UK only)FoxSoccer2Go(US only)Chelsea Rotation To Aid Sporting Lisbon CauseJose Mourinho will ring the changes for Chelsea's final Group G game in the Champions League, with the Blues secure as winners of the stage.Matt LawofThe Telegraphsaid the Special One is giving a host of his stars a mini "winter break" to help with the squad's workload in the coming months. John Terry, Eden Hazard and Willian have all been ordered to take time off and will miss the game on Wednesday night.Law continued, stating that the three players have not trained since the defeat at Newcastle and will only return to training midweek.Chelsea's hard work earlier in the campaign has allowed the team to be in this luxurious position, with the result against Sporting wholly unimportant. But the rotation will surely aid the Portuguese team in their quest for qualification as they face off against the west London side's reserves. The match on Wednesday represents a punishing run of fixtures for the Stamford Bridge outfit, with eight matches in just 25 daysas the English Christmas fixture list fully kicks in. And Mourinho was unapologetic about giving his senior players the night off against Sporting, per Law:Terry, Willian and Hazard are on holidays. Id like to give the whole squad time off because they're always playing, but I have good alternatives for these positions. You know, we have too many matches to play in December. We are one of the few teams in the Premier League who also play in the Capital One Cup at this moment. So everybody has periods to rest, which we don't have. This game gives me the chance to rest these three players. We have already the fifth yellow card to Diego Costa which gave him a rest, and to Matic which gave him one. Now Fabregas has one, which gives him a rest.So step by step, match after match, we're trying to find a little period for them to breathe and have conditions to face the second part of the December month.Mourinho might be shrewd to rest his players nowin their own way they have earned itbut it does not help the competition itself when two sides from the group are still battling for qualification. But this is not the Chelsea boss' problem, and he can only do what he feels is right for his squad in their pursuit of trophies.Chelsea will give their gifted youth product, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, a run out against Sporting as Mourinho looks to blood some of the talented youngsters in his ranks. And football social media director, Doron Salomon, congratulated Mourinho on the selectionsaying the player deserves the chance in the first-team:Mourinho has bigger fish to fry than the team from his homeland, but he will not want to lose the matchespecially in front of his own fans. But he will understand that Sporting will have all the motivation they need to cause a shock and his side will be severely tested if the Portuguese team play to the best of their abilities.Match PreviewChelsea will give vital game-time to a host of their squad, with starts in order for Petr Cech, Andre Schurrle and Mo Salah, perWhoScored.com.The aforementioned Loftus-Cheek will also get the chance to impress the home crowd after progressing through the Stamford Bridge youth system.Sporting Lisbon's biggest disappointment for the tie is the loss of Manchester United loan star, Nani. The winger has been in exceptional form this term but misses out due to a thigh injury. The 28-year-old attacker has been one of the prime performers in the Champions League this season after recent problems at Old Trafford. Nani has four goals and two assists from his five European matches, perWhoScored, and he would have been his side's main attacking threat.WhoScored recently tweeted about Nanito highlight his excellent contribution in Europe's biggest competition:Cedric is also suspended for the tie in London, afterreceivinghis third yellow card against Maribor in the last ChampionsLeague game.Much like many of the top teams in the competition, Chelsea have the depth to beat most opponents even when their best players are outso this will be no easy task for Sporting to qualify. Chelsea will be bringing in a host of international footballers and Lisbon will still need to play their A-game in order to take second place. But the rotation could cause tactical holes in the Chelsea side and the Portuguese team will need to take the opportunity to exploit them. But Schalke will feel that if they can win their final group game, it will be themselves joining the Blues in the knockouts.
