Jankata, Kuola, Elere, other communities decry poor PHCN service

Published by Tribune on Fri, 11 Nov 2011

FOR residents of communities like Jankata, Kuola, Elere, Aba-Panu, Bako and other communities along Apata ' Abeokuta road, the just concluded Eid-el-Kabir festival was not rosy for them, no thanks to the management of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) which made the festival to be dull by holding back electricity supply to the communities.People of the areas explained that there was no electricity supply to the communities during the Ileya festival, a situation which made social activity to nose-dive during the festival.A resident of Jankata community, Mr Jide Odunlami said, 'PHCN spoilt the day for us as the community was thrown into darkness on the festival day.'Personally, when I discovered that I could not bear the dullness and boredom, I had to go to a friend's place at Bodija area of Ibadan to celebrate the Ileya festival. Honestly, it was bad that PHCN could deprive us of social activity in our community on that day. Very bad indeed,' he lamented.Residents of Elere community at Apata, also complained about inability of residents of the community to make use of electricity supply on the Eid-el-Kabir on Sallah day and the day after, which was a public holiday.According to Alhaja Sekinat Akande, a resident of Elere community, Ibadan, though there was supply of electricity to the area for just few hours on the Ileya day, she, however, lamented that major hours of the festival day were without light, 'a situation which made social activity to be dull at Elere community on that day.'The same was the story for the people living at Kuola community, Ibadan. They complained that the management of PHCN in charge of the area made the Eid-el-Kabir to be dull for them by not giving them electricity. They, however, said it was very unfortunate that PHCN could throw their communities to darkness on that special day despite paying their electricity bills.
