Luke Gregerson to Astros: Latest Contract Details, Reaction and Analysis

The Houston Astros made a big splash in free agency Wednesday by reeling in one of the most sought-after relievers on the market in Luke Gregerson.According to Bob Nightengale ofUSA Today, the 'Stros and Gregerson reached an agreement that will pay him more than $6 million per season over three years:Nightengale also provided a yearly breakdown of the contract:The 30-year-old righty was among the preeminent setup men in baseball last season as he posted a 2.12 ERA in 72 appearances for the Oakland Athletics. He previously spent five campaigns with the San Diego Padres, and he boasts a sparkling career ERA of 2.75.Gregerson has filled in at closer at various points throughout his career, but he has almost exclusively been a setup reliever. It remains to be seen how Houston will utilize him, however, it should be noted that incumbent closer Chad Qualls remains on the roster.It seems as though the Astros are still a long way from contention, but adding an elite bullpen piece like Gregerson will undoubtedly give Houston a chance to win more close games than it has in recent years.Follow @MikeChiari on Twitter
