Security challenge: Is Nigeria safe

Published by Nigerian Compass on Fri, 11 Nov 2011

It is fast becoming a recurring decimal that every festive celebration would amount to ruthless killings of innocent Nigerians with no just cause in Northern part of Nigeria.Over 50 percent of Nigerians have been brutally killed by the so-called Boko Haram in recent times.Despite that President Goodluck Jonathan has recently assured Nigerians of security of lives and property, yet nothing has been actively done to fish out the perpetrators of these killings in the country. This committee has gone to bed while people are living in palpable fears in the North.Boko Haram is now a household name for callous killings which has surpassed the previous militant group in Niger- Delta . The committee set up by Jonathan to investigate the infamous killings headed by a Northerner is yet to bring these people to book. The fear of living in Nigeria is the beginning of brain-drain among Nigerians and nothing else. The wanton killings of innocent Nigerians in Yobe State over the celebration of Eid-el-Kabir could be traced to negligence on the part of Federal Government which failed abysmally to build a strong security protection in the country. The Northern governors have not help the situation rather they are apportioning blames on some highly placed personalities. The key perpetrators are working freely in the country with no arrest being made.Boko Haram is not bigger than Nigeria as a country which Jonathan cannot provide adequate security. These disgruntled elements called killers have scared major foreign investors who would have helped the country to create jobs for the teeming population. Even PFN and CAN have lost sizable members to this dastardly acts in the North. Pastor Ayo Oritsejeafor, the President of the two associations has proffered remedies on how to fish out the Boko Haram members, yet government keeps on promising without fulfilling its promises. Now that the yuletide period is at the doorstep, many are worried about the security threats that might occur if not prevented in time.Though kidnappings and other heinous acts are no longer in vogue. The bombings of Police Force Headquarters, UN building and others, are still in the memories of Nigerians, yet government always condemns the acts but solutions are not provided. Many Nigerians are not happy with the present national leadership many voted massively for Jonathan not the party. Though democracy is a process which allows citizens to exercise their political rights but the people bestowed their mindsets on Jonathan. For Jonathan not to attend his younger brother's wedding is not the issue.Bayelsa State is being threatened by desperate politicians who want to get to power by all means with no consideration for the masses. Again, many prominent Nigerians have been assassinated without tracing the killers till date.Tackling security is one of the major problems facing the country.Political analysts believe that unemployment of Nigerian youths has prompted high profile violence in the country.Lastly, security of lives and property should top government agenda and how state police and community policing could help to tackle the situation before Nigeria turns into a failed state. Our image in the international community is dented by powers that be.We must make all Nigerians realise that life is precious and nothing more. The print or the electronic media broadcast by Jonathan would not create fears to Boko Haram members but to make them know that life must be protected and their grievances should be channeled to the appropriate authorities not wasting human lives. 'Odidi, Public Affairs Commentator, lives at 20 Oro Street, Ajegunle Apapa, Lagos.
