Published by Guardian on Sat, 12 Nov 2011

MOVED by the health challenges of former captain of the defunct IICC Shooting Stars Football Club, Sam Ojebode,, Governor Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo State yesterday pledged to foot the medical bill of the ailing veteran footballer.Ojebode is currently being hospitalized at the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan over heart-related problem and has since been recuperating at the hospital.Ajimobi, who made the pledge during a sympathy visit to the former footballer, said the financial assistance by the government had become necessary in order to save Ojebode's life. 'We are here for a sympathy visit and to demonstrate our support to one of our heroes, Samuel Ojebode, who was at one time the captain of the IICC Shooting Stars,' he said. While acknowledging the contribution of the former Green Eagles player to the development of soccer in Nigeria, the governor noted that Ojebode had served not only Oyo State but also the country meritoriously, and so, deserved the support of the government.'In fact, during his tenure as the captain of IICC, we won the African Winners Cup, which, to me, was a great achievement. So we believe that we should be able to support people like this. He had served his state; he had served the nation. And at this time, he also needs our support,'' Sen. Ajimobi stated.
