Yobe Demarcates 550-Kilometre Cattle Routes

IN its bid to avert further clashes between cattle herdsmen and farmers in Yobe State, the state government has demarcated cattle and livestock routes covering a total distance of 550 kilometres.The routes are to contain 6.8 million cattle, camels, donkeys, sheep and goats.Speaking on the completion of the demarcation exercise yesterday in Damaturu, the Programme Manager of Yobe State Livestock Development Programme(YLDP), Dr Mustapha Gaidam, said that it was provision of the 'right of way' for cattle and other livestock that could prevent farmers and cattle herdsmen from fighting over pastures and water points on farmlands and other grazing reserves.'The YLDP has already surveyed, demarcated and placed beacons from Badegana to Ngelzarma, Jakusko to Gogaram, Nguru to Gumsi, Kalallawa to Ngelzarma, Dogon Kuka to Ngalda and Dapchi to Girgir.'The 550-kilometre cattle routes comprise a total of six different routes that will prevent cattle and other livestock from encroaching on farmlands and orchards in the state,' he said.He further explained that the demarcation of the livestock routes was done in collaboration with community leaders.He said large beacons have been erected along the stock routes to avoid encroachment, adding: 'We erected large beacons of solid concrete that could not be easily removed.
