Oyo Lawmakers Sack Council Caretaker Chairmen

Published by Guardian on Sat, 12 Nov 2011

THE Oyo State House of Assembly yesterday sacked 29 of the 33 local government caretaker chairmen in the state and directed Directors of Personnel Management (DPMs) to take over the councils' administration. The lawmakers' decision was sequel to a motion moved by Farinto Fakorede (PDP), representing Iwajowa State Constituency. The 29 caretaker chairmen, who were sworn in on August 8 this year, had served out their three months tnure in accordance with the extant law on local government.Governor Abiola Ajimobi, in a letter dated Thursday, November 10 to the House, had sought renewal of the tenure of the chairmen by another three months. The remaining four local councils are being run by executive secretaries and acting chairmen appointed by the governor. They are nominees of former governor of the state, Senator Rashidi Ladoja, in line with the political pact between Ladoja and Ajimobi, which was rejected by the lawmakers. But things assumed a new twist when the governor's letter was read on the floor of the House, after which Farinto raised a motion that the correspondence be put on hold.Farinto argued that the chairmen had refused to comply with a resolution of the House asking them to furnish it with their scorecard. Most of the lawmakers spoke in support of the motion and frowned at the non-compliance of the chairmen with the resolution. The lawmakers directed the sacked chairmen to appear before them in the Parliamentary Caucus Room on Monday.Meanwhile, the House has passed a supplementary budget of N14.5billion sent to it by the governor three weeks ago.The bill of N14, 556, 543,144billion showed an increase of N191, 500,000 from the N14, 365, 043, 144 in the original bill by the executive.
