First Deepwater target African title

Published by Punch on Sun, 13 Nov 2011

Nigeria champions First Deepwater Basketball Club are aiming to win the Africa Champions Cup for Women 2011, which will be held from December 4 to 10 in Yaound, Cameroon.Eight clubs namely Deepwater, Nigerian league runners-up First Bank, I.N.J.S (Cameroon), Arc-en-ciel (DR Congo), Maculosso (Angola), Interclube (Angola), Ports Authority (Kenya) and O.C.E (Algeria) will compete for honours in Yaound. Deepwater have won the Nigerian women league in the past two seasons and now want a shot at the African title."We came seventh at the last edition but we want to win the trophy now," MD, First Deepwater Discovery Limited, owners of Deepwater basketball team, Babatunde Babalola, said. "The teams are not new to us and we are going to change our tactics this time around. We hope the girls will put up the level of commitment with which they played the just- concluded league. If they do, then hopefully we should be able to win the trophy."Babalola said the club spent about N25m last season but got just N1m for winning the league, adding that interest rather than profit, was the reason behind the success of the champions. The teams assistant coach, Shola Ogunade-Shomala, said they were hoping to beef up the team in their quest to rule the tournament. She said, "We have nine home-based players and we hope to bring in three foreign-based players to beef up the team. Ivoirian player, Ganga Tanoh has already joined the team while DTigress players Chinyere Ibekwe and Sarah Ugokwe will join the team during the week."
