Hockey: Mabisel U-21 tourney flicks off

The Nigeria Hockey Federation/Mabisel U-21 Male and Female Championship would flick off on Sunday (today) at the Adokie Amiesimaka Stadium, Port Harcourt, Rivers State. The competition ends November 20.According to the NHF president, Patrick Ukah, talents discovered at the tournament would form the nucleus of the senior national teams in the nearest future.Ukah said, "We have been saying that some of our senior national teams players have been there for ages and we would like to bring up fresh and younger players. But how do we achieve that if we dont have this kind of tournaments that can produce young players' "The NHF coaches would be on ground to fish out these players, who would form the bedrock of our senior teams in the nearest future. Over 20 state teams and clubs are expected in Port Harcourt on the opening day, with the likes of Niger Flickers, Yobe Warriors, Union Bank, Delta Flickers and the female teams from Bayelsa, Edo, Delta, Niger, Nasarawa and Imo states all vying for honours. MD, Mabisel Trading and Construction Limited, Joseph Alagoa said, "We want to bring back the good old days of hockey in Nigeria and because we believe in the future, we think that this set of players that would be playing at the tourney would make the country proud in the nearest future."
