Lectern Thoughts: The Tabernacle Of The Living God (III)

Published by Guardian on Sun, 13 Nov 2011

IN the outer court is the altar of burnt offering and the brazen laver. In the holy place is the furniture of the court, which is connected with sacrifice. The first sanctuary contained three objects' the altar of incense in the centre, so as to be directly in front of the Ark of the Covenant (1Kg 6:22); the table of showbread on its right or north side, and the golden candlestick on the left or south side. These objects were all considered as being placed before the presence of Jehovah, who dwelt in the holiest of all, though with the veil between. In the holy of holies, within the veil, and shrouded in darkness, there was but one object, the Ark of the Covenant, containing the two tables of stone, inscribed with the Ten Commandments.Inside, the enclosure was divided into two areas, the Holy Place and the Most Holy Place . These two areas were separated by a curtain or veil. Inside the first area were three pieces of furniture' a seven-branched oil lamp-stand on the left (south), a table for 12 loaves of showbread on the right (north) and an altar for incense-burning (west), straight ahead before the dividing curtain.Beyond this curtain was the cube-shaped inner room known as the (Holy of Holies) or (Kodesh Hakodashim). This area housed the Ark of the Covenant (Aaron habrit), inside which were the two stone tablets brought down from Mount Sinai by Moses, on which were written the 10 Commandments. But what can all these ancient, complicated construction details show us today' First, the high quality of the precious materials making up the Tabernacle shows God's greatness and transcendence. Second, the curtain surrounding the Most Holy Place shows God's moral perfection as symbolised by his separation from the common and unclean. Third, the portable nature of the Tabernacle shows God's desire to be with his people as they journeyed through this world.Invariably, a truly born again man or woman is the living God's Tabernacle/Temple. Such carries His presence everywhere. That is why Christians are warned by Paul to live a separate life.skabiaraofciem@yahoo.co.uk
