Fidelity Bank gets ISO information security certification

Published by Punch on Mon, 14 Nov 2011

Fidelity Bank Plc has become the second bank in Nigeria after First Bank of Nigeria Plc to be awarded the ISO27001 certification on Information Security Management System. The Managing Director, Fidelity Bank, Mr. Reginald Ihejiahi, said at the formal presentation of the registration certificate to the bank by the British Standards Institute and the International Organisation for Standardisation in Lagos, that with the certification, the bank was now one of the best in the world."We started this journey since 2008 when our board approved it. Worldwide, we have 5, 000 certified chartered organisations in Africa. It was not easy though, it covered various training and awareness, we had to work on our policies and reframe some of them," he added. He pointed out that the ISO27001 certification was often issued to organisations globally, with the highest standards of information security, adding that it strengthened confidence and trust of companies and organisations that were able to achieve the feat. Also, the Executive Director, Shared Services, Mr. IK Mbagwu, explained that the bank attained the certification because it had invested extensively on the training of its workforce and processes. He said, "The banks quest for ISO27001 Certification began in 2008 with the singular aim of putting in place a globally accepted standard of information security management process that would guarantee the trustworthiness of the banks data transmission and shore up the confidence of its customers and investors."We have demonstrated to our customers and stakeholders alike that our information and systems are not only secure, but that we offer credible, trustworthy and efficient services throughout the bank in line with global best practices."Mbagwu noted that a risk analysis performed during the installation of the programme had helped the bank to cut down its information risk from 53.5 per cent to 20 per cent, indicating a 33.5 per cent reduction in one and a half years."This is a clear indication that the banks business continuity management process has become stronger and better assured. The certification also serves as a guarantee that all relevant laws and regulations are met by the bank in every transaction process," he added.
