Amodu backs Keshi to succeed with Eagles

Published by Punch on Mon, 14 Nov 2011

Former Super Eagles coach Shaibu Amodu is confident that Stephen Keshi will succeed with the Eagles by qualifying Nigeria for the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations and the World Cup.Nigeria were held by visiting Botswana on Saturday in a friendly in Benin City but Amodu, who qualified Nigeria for the 2002 and the 2010 World Cups, said the result meant little to the future of the Eagles. He said, The first time we qualified for the World Cup in Japan/Korea, he was with me and he was a very huge contributor to that success. I think hes the right man for the job.He said, I saw a very relaxed team that tried to express themselves. And that is all what friendlies are about. The fact that they did not win the game is not important. What is important is that the objective of coming together as one family was achieved.I think its fair to say that the opposition were a bit lucky. By the time he plays the second game, he would have had the opportunity of knowing these players and what they can do and from there he can begin to plan how he can structure his team.Amodu commended the Nigeria Football Federation for organising the friendly games for the team, saying the it gave the players and the coach the opportunity to blendI think it was a fantastic idea in the first place by the FA to initiate these two games. It is not easy for the coach as a newcomer in the fold to know all the players. But more than just playing a game is the fact that the match provided an opportunity for both the technical crew and the players to meet and cement a relationship. If there is anything I need to advise Keshi on, I will speak with him one-on-one.
