Eagles unconvincing ' Akpoborie

Published by Punch on Mon, 14 Nov 2011

Former Super Eagles striker Jonathan Akpoborie is not convinced the team would improve rapidly after seeing Nigerias performance against Botswana on Saturday in Benin City.Nigeria drew goalless with the visitors in the friendly encounter but Akpoborie believes a more creative display should have earned the Eagles victory.Botswana are not a side that should give Nigeria problems. Forget that the game was a friendly, we needed to establish superiority over a team like Botswana, Akpoborie said on the telephone on Sunday. We should stop arguing that it was a friendly and that Botswana played defensive. Im very confident that a club like Enyimba or Heartland would beat the Botswana team easily. At a point, I wondered how they qualified for the Nations Cup.The former Wolfsburg player will, however, not blame coach Stephen Keshi for the result, saying there was more to the team than coaching. He said, Keshi is an experienced coach but hes just taking charge after the teams poor display in recent matches. Theres so much to be done to bring the team back to winning ways.I still believe Nigeria needs a foreign manager. He does not have to be the coach of the national team but he must be in a position where all the national team coaches are answerable to him. His job will include identifying young and talented players that will be groomed to take over from the ageing ones.
