Senator, philanthropist decry unemployment, insecurity

Published by Punch on Mon, 14 Nov 2011

THE Senator, representing Ogun East, Chief Adegbenga Kaka, and the governorship candidate for Labour Party in the April election, Chief Olajide Awosedo, have urged governments at all levels and corporate organisations to embark on aggressive employment generation in the country.Kaka and Awosedo, who spoke in Ijebu-Ode on Saturday, said this was capable of reducing rising insecurity in the nation.Kaka, who spoke after a thanksgiving service marking Awosedos 60th birthday, said the bank robbery at the Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago Iwoye, Ogun State on Thursday, reflected the general insecurity across Nigeria. The lawmaker argued that the nations security situation would continue to deteriorate unless government created massive jobs to curtail the high rate of unemployment. He also charged corporate bodies, especially banks, to be socially responsible to their host communities by supporting worthy causes.Kaka said, "The government just has to be socially responsible enough by providing jobs for the jobless."They should adequately equip the police force and of course flush out those bad elements within the police, who serve as linkages between the robbers and their targets."If I have my way, the budgetary allocation to security and armed forces will be reduced. We will spend that money to create employment opportunities because it is the idle hand that becomes the devils workshop. "Rather than giving more money to the police that will go somewhere else than the intended destination, I will rather use that money to build for the future by creating employment opportunities."He added that he had been championing the need for banks operating in Ijebu-Igbo and environs to contribute money in partnership with the community and government for the procurement of Armoured Personnel Carriers and other security equipment to combat crime in the area.Awosedo, a renowned real estate and property magnate, also lamented that the nation was under siege. He said, "Insecurity is not about Ijebuland alone but the whole Nigeria is under siege and government needs to do something very quickly. "And the thing to do about it is very simple. One, it must educate everybody. Two, it must employ every able-bodied man that is educated."Once it can do those things, you have taken poverty away from the people and small or little money will not be attractive to anybody to go and commit crime."
