Suswam's Media adviser Akwaya shot by gunmen

Published by Daily Trust on Mon, 14 Nov 2011

Six armed gunmen last Saturday attacked and shot the Special Adviser to Benue State Governor on Media and Public Affairs, Dr.Cletus Akwaya behind the NNPC mega filling station along Oturkpo Road Makurdi at about 8pm.An eye witness told our correspondent that Dr. Akwaya had visited his uncle Mr. Cletus Kula Wawegh and was chatting with his wife when they noticed the presence of some strangers approaching. Before they could sense trouble one of the assailants allegedly pulled out a gun and shot at Akwaya. It was gathered that Dr. Akwaya had grabbed one of them and in the course of a struggle one of the gunmen shot him in the head and left hand. He later managed to escape from the attackers, some of who were said to have used clubs to hit him.He was said to have escaped through the bush where he was later discovered by a motor cyclist who picked him to the 'B' Division Police station Makurdi and later took him to the Federal Medical Centre at Apir where he was receiving treatment. The state deputy Governor, Chief Steve Lawani who visited Dr.Akwaya at his Hospital bed condemned the act saying at the time the Suswam administration was doing everything possible to move the state forward, some mischief makers were busy pulling them back in the name of politics. He said anybody who is aggrieved over the election result should have waited for the court decision rather than instigating violence against government officials and described Dr. Akwaya as one of the best Advisers Benue has and will not be intimidated from what he knows doing best. The deputy governor assured that the security agents would be mobilized to fish out perpetrators of the act no matter how long it will take and urged Benue people to go about their normal business as government is on top of the situation. When contacted, the police Public Relations Officer for Benue State Police Command, ASP Alaribe Ejike confirmed the incident but said the Divisional Police Officers for 'B' division was yet to fully brief him over the matter.
