Two arraigned for stealing Kuforiji-Olubi's cash, N5m jewellery

Two women, Foluke Adeyemi and Nike Adesina, were on Monday arraigned before a Yaba Chief Magistrates Court, Lagos, for allegedly stealing jewellery and cash belonging to a former Secretary of Commerce and Tourism, Dr. Bola Kuforiji-Olubi.Adeyemi (23) and Adesina (27) were arraigned on two counts of felony and stealing jewellery estimated at N5m in addition to Nigerian and foreign currencies between April and October 2010 at Apapa GRA, Lagos.That you, Adeyemi and Adesina at the said period, stole the jewellery and the sums of $4,000, 1,620, N350,000, N375,500, N175,880, totalling about N9m, property of Kuforiji-Olubi, the charge stated in part.The accused persons pleaded not guilty to the charges, which were said to have contravened sections 516 and 390 (9) of the Criminal Code Cap 17, Vol.II, Laws of Lagos State, 2003.Appealing to the court to grant Adeyemi bail on liberal terms, her lawyer, Mr. Gabriel Uwaifo, cited the fact that she had been in police custody for about one month.Apart from that, she is a mother with a young child, he said.Adesinas lawyer, Mr. S. Mustapha, also urged Chief Magistrate Demi Ajayi to grant her bail because she had spent about two weeks in detention.Prosecutor I. Ateloa however, said he did not have an objection to the lawyers bail applications, calling on the chief magistrate to exercise her discretion because of the high profile nature of the theft.Ajayi granted the accused persons bail in the sum of N250,000 each and two sureties in like sum. She said the sureties must be at least 40 years old and must produce evidence of tax payment to the government of Lagos State.The case was adjourned until December 16 for trial.
