Yobo to equal Muda, Kanu caps

Published by Punch on Tue, 15 Nov 2011

There are many things at stake when the Super Eagles file out against the Chipolopolo of Zambia today at the Ahmadu Bello Stadium in Kaduna. The Eagles will be looking for their first win under a new coach; Stephen Keshi will be looking for his first win as the Eagles coach, and Joseph Yobo will be playing to level up with Mudashiru Lawal and Nwankwo Kanu.If Yobo plays the match, he will amass 86 caps, thus, equalling the all-time record set by Lawal and Kanu. But the Nigeria captain insists that beating the Zambians and returning Eagles to winning ways is more important than personal milestones. He said, It is great that I am about to equal a record set by these great men. But dont forget that I have not played the game yet. The coaches still have to select me for the match before we talk about equalling the record. In any case, it is more important for us to beat Zambia than me making the 86th mark. And having come this far, Yobos hunger for the national colours has not waned.I want the team to start winning again, starting with this Zambia game. We have now drawn our last two home fixtures against Guinea and Botswana. So, we need to come back to winning ways. I will not rest until the national team is great again, he said.If he continues through the 2013 Africa Nations Cup qualifiers, he could become the first Nigerian to hit the 100 caps.Well, I still feel very strong. I am not feeling like one who is about to stop. I think I can go as far as 100 caps before I quit, but I want those caps to come on merit, he said. The Nigeria Football Federation has announced that the defender will be honoured before the match in Kaduna. We have deep respect for Joseph Yobos outstanding contributions to Nigeria football, his patriotism and his humility, NFF President Aminu Maigari said in Abuja.
