Published by Punch on Tue, 15 Nov 2011

Authorities of the Ese-Odo Local Government of Ondo State said on Monday it had started the clearing of its waterways with a view to putting in place effective security measure in the various riverside communities in the area.Chairman of the council, Mr. Akin Sowore, stated this while speaking with journalists at Igbekebo, headquarters of the council. He explained that the various security challenges in the coastal area compelled the council to embark on the project, noting that it would also ease water transportation in the area. The council boss stated that the local government would soon engage the services of various youth groups to complement the Navy and other security agencies in its efforts at combating crime in the coastal area.He said it was the responsibility of the council to put in place adequate measures that would guarantee the security of lives and property of the people in the area. The chairman commended the naval officers at the Igbokoda Forward Operation Base for their patriotism and selfless services to make the coastal area of the state crime-free.He hinted that the council would ensure that all strategic places in the waterways within its jurisdiction were properly manned by the joint security outfit.Sowore urged traditional rulers, opinion and communities leaders in the area to cooperate with the council in its bid to transform the area and make the council a crime-free zone.He explained that his administration would soon embark on drilling of boreholes in some communities in the area in order to address the issue of potable water, while the abandoned ones would be renovated for effective use.The chairman noted with concern that it was a pity that the people that lived on water had no access to potable water. He commended the state governor, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, for showing special interest in the welfare of and development of the people of Ese-Odo Local Government.
