EFCC AND EX-GOVERNORS

Published by Tribune on Tue, 15 Nov 2011

The arrest of some former governors by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has raised dust in political circles. Some political elders and supporters of the arrested erstwhile governors said the arrests were politically motivated.ACCORDING to some politicians, many of the former governors served their various states with uncommon honesty and patriotism and so what they deserve are honour and respect. In a particular case, youths of the Peoples Democratic Party were said to be preparing to receive one of the former governors with a rousing welcome.IN another case, some elders and opinion leaders say they cannot understand why the EFCC is after a former governor, who they argue, served his state meritoriously and left the scene with his integrity very intact. Such reactions to the arrest of the erstwhile governors came from the electorate who gave the former state executives the mandate to preside over the affairs of their states.IT is, therefore, imperative for the EFCC to understand the true meaning of democracy. If the people who elected those ex-governors are saying they served their interests while they were in office, what is the business of EFCC in arraigning them'DEMOCRACY is government of the people by the people and for the people. Once the people have returned a verdict of good servants on those former governors, the EFCC should not cry more than the bereaved. It should drop all the charges against the accused and allow them to go for higher ground politically instead of harassing and slamming them with frivolous charges.IF really those former governors stole public funds, they must have done so on behalf of the electorate who are now appreciating them through their reactions to the arrest of the ex-governors. And indeed, they spent such funds for the people, which explains why the people are not happy with the EFCC's action.
