Uche brothers give Keshi first victory

Published by Tribune on Wed, 16 Nov 2011

UCHE brothers, Kalu and Ike, saved the day for the Super Eagles as the Nigerian team laboured to a 2-0 win over the Chipolopolo of Zambia in an international friendly played yesterday at the Ahmadu Bello Stadium, Kaduna. The match was the second under new coach, Stephen Keshi. The Eagles, four days ago, had played a goalless draw against Botswana in Benin and looked forward to a winning outing against The Chipolopolo.A ninth minute goal by Kalu Uche who connected home a long pass from hardworking Ahmed Musa put the Eagles ahead but the Nigerian side later went to sleep and lost proceedings to the Zambians led by Christopher Katongo. While the first half performance was a little better, the second half was nothing to write home about for the Eagles who were forced to run around the pitch by the well- coordinated and skillful Zambians. The Kaduna fans did not hide their feelings as they jeered at the Eagles. When the fans were already trooping out of the stadium, Ike Uche sealed victory for the Eagles as he finished off yet another clinical pass from Musa.Keshi described the match as tough but rewarding.''It was a tough one but quite beneficial to the players and the technical crew, our approach to the game was successful, even if we did not quite impress, we got the result we wanted,'' Keshi said in a post-match interview.
