League top scorer dispute: NPL banks on video evidence

Published by Tribune on Wed, 16 Nov 2011

WHILE Dolphins FC of Port Harcourt emerged the winner of the 2010/11 NPL season without any dispute, the league board is faced with the trouble of who emerges as the top scorer of the season. While it was widely reported that Kaduna United's Jude Aneke topped the chart with 20 goals, one more than the 19 goals credited to his closest rival, Ibrahim Ajani, Sunshine Stars officials claimed that the record was wrong, insisting that Ajani also netted 20 goals in all. However, the NPL said video evidence of the match between Ocean Boys and Sunshine Stars played in Yenagoa will be used to settle the matter.Eye-witness reports said Ajani scored one of the goals when his club was forced to a 2-2 draw by Ocean Boys with eye witnesses account crediting the other goal scored by the team to Dele Olorundare. In that way, Ajani's total goal will be 19.However, the referee's report stated that the Sunshine striker scored both goals bringing his haul to 20, a claim that is being hotly disputed."The referee's report says that Ajani scored the two goals against Ocean Boys, but because there is controversy about it, we will have to review the video of the game before we can make a final decision." said Tunji Babalola, NPL's Acting Executive Secretary.
