Published by Tribune on Wed, 16 Nov 2011

Traders at Owode Market, Academy area of Ibadan in Oluyole Local Government Area of Oyo State, have tasked both the authorities of the council and state government to rehabilitate of the market to make it look modern. The traders said this call became imperative because many markets were now wearing a modern look in other states of the South West of the country like Ondo, Ekiti and Lagos. They also said Edo State government and its local governments were embarking on rehabilitation of old markets in the state, giving them a facelift to meet standards of modern day business. Some of the traders who spoke with Community News said they had no choice than to raise their voices at this time because they knew that the council's caretaker chairman was a man of action, a proactive leader and a lover of good things. The traders also affirmed that they appreciated the good works which the present governor of Oyo State, Senator Abiola Ajimobi was doing to take the state to the next level. Therefore, they decided to make this demand so that they could share from the good works the governor was doing so as to experience dividends of democracy. The traders also tasked the council boss to embark on the rehabilitation of bad roads within and those linking the market in order to boost economic activities in the area, adding that if this is done, the council would also be able to generate more revenue. Some of the demands of the traders at the market inclueded, provision of modern toilet to stem dirtiness in the market, provision of boreholes so that the traders would have access to drinking water and be able to use the water to maintain environmental hygiene in the market, as well as provision of mini-fire brigade and police station and if possible so that the market would be able to compete with other big markets in the state. The traders, however, said there are some shops in the market which people, especially those selling besides major roads in the city can occupy, stressing that the state government should relocate road side traders to the market, stressing that doing this would not only prevent accident and traffic grid on major roads within Ibadan city, it would also increase the tempo of business activity and boost customers'patronage in the market.
