Olympic Eagles draws Inter, as team arrives Lagos

Published by Guardian on Wed, 16 Nov 2011

THE Olympic Eagles yesterday faced the biggest task of their build to this month's African Under-23 as they were forced to a 1-1 draw by Ghanaian division one side, Inter Allies in Accra. Also, the Coach Austin Eguavoen-tutored side is expected to arrive Lagos today just as the handler expressed disappointed over the team's outing in yesterday's tie.Playing on Astro turf for the first time since arriving Accra, the Olympic Eagles endured a goalless first half in which they struggled withfatigue after spending over one hour in early morning Accra traffic. The Olympic Eagles broke the deadlock in the 76th minutes after a beautiful combination from second half substitutes, SundayNwadialu and Olaitan Otubanjo, with the Atletico Madrid midfielder, Otubanjo beating the rushing Allies goalkeeper to put the Nigerian side ahead.Guy Anicent pulled the host level in the 95th minute from a controversial penalty.'I am disappointed in the result. My disappoint stems from your inability to hold on to your lead. But I also understand because youhave played three games in the space of five days but that's not enough for us to give away our lead. All the same well done boys Iknow we can do better,' Eguavoen said in a post match meeting. The players however, blamed the poor outing on fatigue, lack of communication and poor marking.'Coach I must confess, we were not in our best of form today. We were fatigued due to the long traffic but aside from that we lack communication of the pitch and our marking was poor,' stated Kingsley Udoh. The team played three matches won twoand drew one in their twelve days stay in Accra.
