Hostilities begin at Oyo special sports tourney

ACTION will commence today as athletes would compete for honours in four events at the maiden Oyo State Special Sports championship holding at the Obafemi Awolowo Stadium in Ibadan, Oyo State capital.The tourney, which was declared opened by the State Deputy Governor, Otunba Moses Alake Adeyemo would have over 150 athletes in action.The athletes would compete for table tennis, athletics, powerlifting and swimming, while the state also assured of its support to the athletes.According to Adeyemo, the athletes should see the sports fiesta as an avenue to making friends and as well give their best to make the tournament more competitive.He however, lauded the sponsor, Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC) for its interest in sports, while urging the firm to involve in more sporting activities in the state.The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Youth and Sports, Mrs. J. K. Akintunde assured of a hitch free festival saying, the ministry is poised to organise more sporting activities as a means of encouraging the athletes.Athletes' representative, Muyiwa Fatogun called on the government to honour the athletes to the last National Sports Festival in Port Harcourt, saying that this would encourage the athletes to do more for the state.
