Ethiope West wins ASCON Football Championship in Delta

Published by Guardian on Wed, 16 Nov 2011

ETHIOPE West Council Area of Delta over the weekend defeated Aniocha South by a lone goal at the Jay Jay Okocha Stadium, Ogwashi Uku, to win the second ASCON Oil U-17 championship. The event, organized by Dream Team FootballAcademy in honour of late George Enenmoh, lived up to its billing as an avenue for the discovery of talented young players for the national teams. In the entertaining final game, Ethiope West's Joseph Willy scored an 85th minute to win the coveted trophy and the N500, 000 star prize for his team against a resilient Aniocha South.Earlier before the match, eyebrows were raised by officials of the Oshimili North LGA, who, frustrated by their ouster in the semi final stage, accused the teams of fielding unqualified players in the final. The protest led to the disqualification of five players from the Ethiope team. But undaunted by the disqualifications, Ethiope, led by Coach Jolomi Atune Ali, took the battle to its opponents from the blast of the whistle. However, its early incursions were well read by a solid Aniocha defence marshaled by Chinedu Ofuogu and Christian Umeiru, and goalkeeper Bright Onyeka, who kept the Aniocha team in the match with splendid saves.Willy, however, broke the deadlock in the 85th minute when he capitalised on a rare defensive blunder to slot home the decider. The highlight of the event was the arrival of the Imo State delegation, led by its Commissioner of Youth and Sports, Comrade Kenneth Emelu, who stood in for the executive governor, Owelle Rochas Okorocha.
