Published by Tribune on Wed, 23 Mar 2011

The Ports AuthorityPolice (PAP) has begun a major man-hunt for a syndicate which specialises in stealing from innocent business class and laden containers, while and kitted in police or military uniforms. The manhunt began after it dawned on crack detectives of the command that the onerous task of retrieving two stolen 20-footer containers of cocoa seeds meant for export would remained a mystery until they were able to track down and unmask the uniformed men who were allegedly engaged by one Sule, aka Baba Nike, also at large. The PAP Commissioner, Hilary Opara, told the Nigerian Tribune that though he cherished the idea of quickly charging those arrested and presently under police custody to court in a bid to ensure timely justice, he would nonetheless leave no stones unturned, until  the active perpetators of the crime are brought to book.Shedding light on the case which has already lingered for a month, the PAP boss said those arrested had made useful statement to the police, creating a situation which has now made it more compelling to unmask and arrest the suspects still at large. He gave the names of those the police had arrested as one Ola Bello, the syndicate driver, Bolanle Ajayi another accomplice, Femi Oyebanji, an intended receiver and buyer of the stolen items, and his personal driver, Niyi Jacobs, alongside the owner of the uncompleted building, Fawehinmi Olanrewaju,  where the stolen cocoa seeds were found. We have begun a manhunt, disclosed the PAP boss, assuring maritime stakeholders of police commitment to ensure law and order as it protects public and private property. The sum of N207,500 was recovered from the intended buyer of the stolen goods and his personal driver, by the Police as an exhibit which was duly recorded the PAP Commissioner stated, adding that the stolen goods were already released to the owners on bond.Let me sound a note of warning here that all the criminally minded people in the ports should desist from their criminal acts or leave the ports as there will be no hiding place for them anymore, he concluded. It would be recalled that  a truck marked XX 776 LSR loaded with 2 x 20 foot containers of cocoa meant for export from Ikotun, en-route Apapa port was hijacked at Oshodi by hoodlums who claimed that the truck scratched their car rear, dispossess the original driver of the truck, and fled with it to Ikorodu area of Lagos.
