Eagles vs. Redskins: Score and Twitter Reaction from 2014 Regular Season

Published by Bleacher Report on Sun, 21 Dec 2014

A couple of weeks ago, the Philadelphia Eagles controlled their own postseason destiny. Now, they'll need a Christmas miracle to be playing football in January.Robert Griffin III threw for 220 yards, Alfred Morris ran for 83 and the Washington Redskins played spoiler on Saturday night, knocking off Philly 27-24 at FedEx Field.DeAngelo Hall and Brian Orakpo quickly took to Twitter to boast about the victory:Griffin, via the team's official Twitter feed, talked about playing in the win:Mark Sanchez(374 yards, two touchdowns) and LeSean McCoy (116 total yards, one score) had big statistical games, Zach Ertz set a franchise-record with 15 receptions and the Eagles outgained their NFC East foes 495-305. But 13 penalties for 102 yards, two missed field goals and one particularly untimely interception prevented them from earning a victory.ESPN's Louis Riddick summed it up:Philly now needs Dallas to lose its final two games to have any shot of claiming the division it led for so long. The Detriot Lions, meanwhile, are officially in the playoffs:The Eagles' first of two turnovers came on the game's opening possession when Ryan Kerrigan beat second-year tackle Lane Johnson around the edge, knocking the ball from Sanchez and recovering the fumble himself.ESPN radio's Chris Russell put Kerrigan's current sack streak in historical perspective:Unfortunately for Washington, the pass rush outside of Kerrigan was mostly nonexistent. With loads of time to operate in the pocket, Sanchez settled into a groove and completed 75 percent of his throws in the first half. With McCoy also eating up big chunks of yardage on the ground, the Eagles were consistently moving the ball and took a 14-10 lead into halftime. As ScoutsNotebook.com's Tommy Lawlornoted, Chip Kelly's uptempo attack was back to normal after a couple of slow weeks against the Seattle Seahawks (45 plays) and Dallas Cowboys (53 plays). But while the offense was clicking, the special teams and defense built the Eagles into a second-half hole.Cody Parkey missed a pair of field goals to spoil the team's only two possessions of the third quarter. As ESPN Stats & Info noted, that doubled the amount of misses for the normally accurate kicker:Washington responded with a pair of long drives ending with Darrel Young one-yard touchdown runs to make it 24-14. The latter was set up by a 55-yard connection between Griffin and DeSean Jackson, the duo's second 50-plus-yard gain of the game.PhillyVoice.com's Jimmy Kempski noted an interesting comparison between Jacksonwho finished with four catches for 126 yardsand his former team:Chip Kelly talked about his secondary's shaky play, via theThe (Delaware) News Journal's Martin Frank:RGIII attempted to go to the Jackson well one too many times, though. After Sanchez found Riley Cooper in the end zone for the second time, Griffin let a deep throw hang in the air a little too long, and safety Nate Allen intercepted it.Pro Football Focus' Mike Clay analyzed the play:Philly moved right back down the field, and Parkey knocked through a chip shot to tie the game at 24 with just over six minutes remaining. The Eagles quickly got the ball back and looked like they were driving for the win, as Sanchez played catch with Ertz and slowly marched down the field. Once in Washington territory, though, he misfired for Jeremy Maclin and was intercepted by Bashaud Breeland with 1:36 to go.Sports Illustrated's Doug Farrar put it rather simply:On the very next play, Pierre Garcon took a short pass 23 yards, and a roughing-the-passer penalty moved Washington all the way into the red zone. Kai Forbath then hit a 26-yard game-winning field goal. The Redskins will close out the season at home against the Dallas Cowboys. They would surely enjoy continuing to play spoiler against their divisional rivals, but a loss and subsequent better draft slot may be more beneficial at this point. As for the Eagles, they travel to New York to take on the Giants. They can still get into the playoffs with a lot of help, but a once-promising season looks set to end in a week.
