Council tasks FG on science

The Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council on Wednesday said the National Economic Empowerment and Development Strategy, Vision 20-20-20 and the Transformation Agenda could be actualised if the Federal Government prioritise the promotion of science, technology and vocational education, and training.The Executive Secretary of NERDC, Prof. Godswill Obioma, said this on Wednesday, during a one-day workshop in Enugu, in an effort to revive Science, Technology and Mathematics education in senior secondary schools across the country.Obioma told participants at the workshop, made up of stakeholders in the education sector and professionals, that the only way the nations economy could be transformed and sustained was through education that would empower people.He added that the ongoing curriculum reform initiative in senior secondary schools emphasised value re-orientation, poverty eradication and employment generation capabilities in learners.The NERDC boss explained that the curriculum would provide content and further learning experience that would engender the acquisition of functional skills for job creation and wealth generation, which would eventually lead to the reduction of poverty within the communities and the nation at large.
