Daniel back in court today

A former Ogun State Governor, Gbenga Daniel, will on Thursday (today) appear at an Ogun State High Court, in Abeokuta, to face corruption charges preferred against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.Justice Olanrewaju Mabekoje, had on October 14, shortly after granting bail to the former governor, fixed today for the commencement of trial.The EFCC, on October 12, arraigned Daniel on 16 counts of stealing, fraudulent conversion and failure to declare assets. He pleaded not guilty to all the counts contained in a 304-page-charge.The EFCC, alleged that Daniel, while governor between 2003 and 2011, stole $4m (N6.48m) being property of the state government deposited in the Ogun State Government domiciliary account with First City Monument Bank.He was said to have perpetrated the stealing by fraudulently converting the sum to private use for acquiring the shares of Glanvill Enthoven & Company (Nigeria Limited) as well as those of 21st Century Technology Limited.The EFCC said the stealing was carried out in three tranches as follows, $1m on March 31; $2m on April 8, and $1m on April 28, 2010.The property of Ogun State Government that Daniel was accused of fraudulently converting to private use included the Judges Quarters at Ijebu-Ode and Sagamu; 4.107 hectares of land within Scheme 1, Area 1, Riverview Estate, Isheri along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway; and 2.011 hectares of land situated within the state Secretariat Complex along IBB Boulevard, Abeokuta, Ogun State.
