Backers of the Boko Haram sect

Published by Tribune on Thu, 17 Nov 2011

Boko Haram has now come out with an addition to its agenda in its dogged determination to spread Islam in this country. Its clamour for 'sharialisation' of Nigeria is not a new demand in that it is an age-long desire by Muslim religious leaders in the North, then known as Islamisation of Nigeria. The change in nomenclature does not matter but the force behind it. It is now Sharia or destruction in all forms-an irreconcilable issue. One is therefore very much amused about the suggestion of amnesty or sitting down at a round-table to iron out a cause being championed by members of the sect. For this to happen, they have to get clearance from their backers in the pursuit of Sharia propagation.Former President Olusegun Obasanjo's statement to the effect that the sect has some backers in the background should not be despised. He is talking out of experience in the sense that he was (at one time) at the receiving end when the fire of sharia was sweeping across some states in North. He was actually tempted into reacting to the contrary and had he countered the moves made (overtly and covertly) by the sharia mongers, the country would have been thrown into a state of anarchy. But, by an act of providence, he maintained an acid silence on the issue, and later came out with a verdict that allayed the fears of Nigerians by declaring the hullabaloo a 'political issue.'Undoubtedly, there are backers prodding Boko Haram sect members in its intensification. There are two main groups comprising the known and unknown personalities, fingered as the backers of the religious sect in the country. While the first group is not far-fetched, the other is faceless and considered more lethal. The two groups have delight in what is currently taking place-enforcement of the spread of sharia without let or hindrance. For this reason, the two groups cannot come into the open to join the band-wagon of those condemning those acts of wanton killings in the name of Islam. Those that top the list of the first group are state goverors (past and present) in those states where sharia has been imposed on their citizens. Members of the Supreme Council on sharia and all who have spoken in support of its introduction right from inception in the year 1999 through 2000 cannot exonerate themselves from tacit support.Discourses on the subject matter in both print and electronic media stand as testimonies and those who aligned themselves with the clarion call are there to be fished out.Another very powerful group comprises some Imams in the North. In the last presidential election, some of them turned themselves into campaign managers for politicians. They were reported as persuading the electorate that voting for Jonathan was voting against Islam-Sunday Punch June 26,2011 refers. The governors in question exhibited utter ignorance as far as the understanding of the Holy Qur'an is concerned because they did not want to be fingered as apostates-worthy of being stoned to dealth. They did not have the temerity to 'hurl truth at falsehood, until truth triumph and falsehood be no more....' Holy Qur'an 21:18. The truth of the matter is that Sharia as being practised in the Arab world and adopted in Nigeria is not on the whole of divine origin as far as the Book is concerned. One typical example (there are many others in the Holy Book) which has brought ridicule to proponents of Sharia has to do with women accused of fornication as a result of their being pregnant. It became a subject of litigation and the end result was that the 'accused'were discharged and acquitted to the shame of their accusers.Suffice it to say that the allegation, (in the first place) has no support of the Holy Book. That was one of the indications of manipulation of its injunctions. Those governors (or anybody for that matter) are free to challenge that significant example. The unknown group (in the background) is dangerious and their subterranean campaigns are widespread. One cannot but call attention to certain events which (when strung together) would serve as pointers to the unfolding episodes. In November 1989, three years after throwing Nigeria into the orbit of Arab world via Organisation of Islamic Conference (OIC), the facilitator (former President Ibrahim Babangida) organised a conference in Abuja made up of 24 countries in Africa. The group gathered under the title 'Islam in Africa Organisation (IOA) and at the end of the gathering, one of Nigerian delegates was so elated and was credited as saying! 'We are ready to go to any lenght to get SHARIA established in this country(Nigeria) whether we are alive or dead' Daily Sketch of Dec. 14, 1989 (page 8) refers. Government should endeavour to fish out that aforementioned enthusiastic Nigerian (') and more about the conference which gulped billions of naira. And in 1993, four years after that conference, a presidential election was annulled at the insistence of some faceless Nigerian too powerful for IBB (the President!) to resist. Those in authority should not rule out the active support of the likes of IBB's tormentors. Cover-up of those elements will always attract insunuation under present circumstances-it is inevitable. It has to be added that Nigeria is a very good example of the adage which says 'man proposes and God disposes.'In the light of foregoing disclosures, President Goodluck Jonathan should not be deluded into believing that members of the Boko Haram sect are the only menace in the present scheme of things. They are mere puppets (small fries) in the hands of some forces which are after the downfall and subjugation of this country. One is therefore calling his attention to what Paul the Apostle said in his letter to Ephesians 6:12-14. It is a fight against 'principalities, powers and rulers.'It will not be easy in dislodging the sect because of the indoctrination already ingrained in the and some other Muslims on the boderline. They have been brain-washed to regard Christians as infidels/unbelievers (Kafris) and as such, they are enemies of Islam. This is what OIC imparted in its members as far back as 1974. In a six-point resolution, they were directed to deal decisively with Christians in their fields of eadeavour.Reprimand therefore awaits any Muslim who dares to point out any member of Boko Haram. Outright elimination is hanging like sword of 'Damocles' on those who have aversion to the atrocities going on around them. But for America's supreme intyelligence network, Osama bin Laden would still have been enjoying protection from fellow Muslims in Afganistan and Pakistan. They have the belief that he was after enemies of Islam and should not be betrayed.Akinwande wrote in from Surulere, Lagos.
