NFF won't interfere in Mikel's case

Published by Punch on Fri, 18 Nov 2011

The Nigeria Football Federation has promised not to interfere in coach Stephen Keshis decision on Mikel Obi after the Chelsea midfielder failed to join the Super Eagles for the two friendly games against Botswana and Zambia.Mikel reported injured and sought permission to leave the team but Keshi said after the game against Zambia in Kaduna on Tuesday that he would be disappointed if the player featured for his club this weekend after his injury claim.NFF Technical Committee Chairman, Chris Green, however said on Thursday that only Keshi could decide Mikels fate in the Eagles if it turned out the player had not been truthful in his claim."Keshi is in charge of the team, we can only assist him. We dont intend to interfere in the relationship between him and his players," Green said."Keshi will take his decision on Mikel on the advice of the medical team who will determine whether the injury was enough to stop him from playing for Nigeria. The NFF wont play a role in that decision."Green also debunked the report that the NFF planned to report Wigans Victor Moses to FIFA after the player failed to honour the invitation to play in the friendlies.Moses had featured for England at the U-16 and the U-20 levels but the NFF fought for six months to have him play for Nigeria at the senior level. He said, "Moses has not said he will not play for Nigeria. He was invited but could not make it; that doesnt mean he has dumped Nigeria for another country. It can happen with any other player.
