Published by Punch on Fri, 18 Nov 2011

The Federal Government on Thursday in Abuja received a draft White Paper on the report of the committee set up by the Federal Government to look into security challenges in the North-Eastern part of the country perpetrated by the Islamic sect, Boko Haram. The report was submitted to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator Pius Anyim.A statement by the Special Assistant (Media) to the SGF, Mr. Sam Nwaobasi, said Anyim "thanked members of the White Paper Drafting Committee, for completing the assignment in record time."He said, "The SGF assured them that the document will be presented to the Federal Executive Council early, as President Goodluck Jonathan is ready to address the issue urgently."Although Nwaobasi was silent on the recommendations of the White Paper, he informed our correspondent that he did not know the details. The Chairman of the Committee and Minister of Interior, Mr. Abba Moro, had earlier expressed the gratitude of all members of the committee to the Federal Government for the honour done to them to serve the nation during the assignment. He said, "The committee hopes that the recommendations contained in the draft White Paper will assist government in finding lasting peace in the zone and indeed throughout Nigeria."The Federal Government had on Friday October 21 constituted two White Paper Drafting Committees on the reports of the Presidential Committee on security challenges in the North-East and as well as that of the Investigation Panel on post-Election Violence and Civil Disturbances. Meanwhile, President of the Senate, David Mark, has called on the Arewa Consultative Forum, to work out a plan to deal with the security situation and end the orgy of violence in the country.ACF, the umbrella socio-cultural body of the Northern region paid a visit to Mark on Thursday through its Contact and Mobilisation Committee ahead of its forthcoming conference tagged Sustainable Peace in the North.Mark said the state of insecurity in the North had assumed a worrisome degree and advocated the collaboration of the elders of the North and the government in finding a solution to the quagmire.
